American Artists

A collaborative challenge to engage students in Art History

Preparation

Each class will choose an American artist and prepare 9 clues about him.  Click here for a list of artists

The clues should include:

1.  Media used

2.  A Historical Event that might have influenced the artist’s work

3.  a Compositional devise used

4.  a Technique used

5.  2 images

6.  3 additional clues about the artist

Agenda

·Sept. 18 – Partner classes will exchange 9 clues

·Interim – classes research to determine mystery artists that match clues provided

·Sept 24 – each class can ask ONE yes/no question.  Guesses are made and artists are revealed.

You’re right, “compositional device” doesn’t really make a lot of sense. You can interpret it any way you want. The goal is just to get another clue out of the kids.

If it were me, I might say, “he centered his subjects on his canvas.” Or, “He used the rule of thirds.” I think gridding would be more of a technique than a compositional device. You could say, the “Grid Method...” like lining everything up on a grid. Know what I mean?

I guess airbrushing is both a technique and a medium, right?

Again, in the end, the spirit of the assignment is to do research to find clues- so I wouldn’t sweat the details. :-)
