Click here for the Registration Form

Jan. 7 AND Jan. 11

30 min. sessions

(Both sessions are needed to complete the challenge)

Preparation

Each class will choose a country in Africa and prepare 6 clues about the location.  The clues should include:

1. physical feature

2. political feature

3. an example of HEI (Human Environment Interaction)

4. availalbe natural resources & how it affects economic activity

5. demographic data

6.  clue of choice

Agenda

  • Jan. 7 – Partner classes will exchange 6 clues
  • Interim – classes research to determine mystery location in Latin America that match clues provided
  • Jan. 11 – each class can ask ONE yes/no question.  Guesses are made and mystery locations are revealed.

Materials

FAQ

1.  Country assignments - will be confirmed after registration

2.  Grading

Other” grade for the prep work & a “Minor” grade for the actual Mystery Quest

The minor grade is going to be based on participation, work ethic and if they guessed correctly or not (smaller percentage of their grade)

or “other” grade, half based on prep work, half on the actual MQ

3.  Class structure

dividing my students into 6 groups (1/clue per group)

4.  Student Guidance

  • provide direction to the students to help them make the questions not too easy nor too obscure

  • “it has 3 cities over 1 Million” might be a reasonable clue that helps narrow down, but not define a country.
  • giving IMR numbers directly might be too much, but saying it is “one of the highest in the region” might work.
  • questions can’t be so vague that they encompass all countries, either. “Settled by Spain or Portugal” would pretty much not narrow down anything.

5.  Technology Requirements

Please check with your campus librarian on the process to reserve and checkout your video conference cart.

The day of the conferences

  1. Plug the cart into network (best bet is to temporarily unplug a working computer or phone)
  2. Plug the cart into electricity
  3. Turn on the project
  4. Know how to MUTE your microphone

The Preparation and Agenda areas both mention choosing countries from Latin America. Which is correct? Africa or Latin America?
